Children with Special Needs: Growth Chart and Nutrition Calculator

Patient Information (Special Needs)

About This Tool

This tool is designed for healthcare professionals to assess the growth of children with specific health conditions (Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy) using condition-specific growth charts and to estimate their unique nutritional requirements based on published, evidence-based formulas.

Formulas Used

Energy Requirement Formulas (Down Syndrome)

  • < 5 years: Peterson Catch-Up Growth using 50th percentile weight from the Down Syndrome chart.
  • 5-11 years (Girls [2]): 14.3 kcal/cm × height (cm)
  • 5-11 years (Boys [2]): 16.1 kcal/cm × height (cm)
  • ≥ 12 years (IOM REE [1]):
    • Healthy Weight Male: 79 - (34.2 × age in years) + (730 × height in m) + (15.3 × weight in kg)
    • Healthy Weight Female: 322 - (26 × age in years) + (504 × height in m) + (11.6 × weight in kg)
    • Overweight/Obese Male: 420 - (33.5 × age in years) + (418.9 × height in m) + (16.7 × weight in kg)
    • Overweight/Obese Female: 516 - (26.8 × age in years) + (347 × height in m) + (12.4 × weight in kg)

Height Estimation Formulas (Cerebral Palsy)

  • MS Mokhy, 2021 (Ages 2-18y) [6]:Height (cm) = 32.2 + (3.14 × Tibia Length in cm)
  • Stevenson et al., 1995 (Ages <12y) [7]:
    • Height (cm) = 30.8 + (3.26 × Tibia Length in cm)
    • Height (cm) = 2.69 × Knee Height (cm) + 24.2
    • Height (cm) = (4.35 × Upper Arm Length in cm) + 21.8

Energy Requirement Formulas (Cerebral Palsy)

  • 5-12 years (Culley & Middleton, 1969 [4]):
    • Without motor dysfunction: 14.7 kcal/cm × height (cm)
    • Ambulatory patients with motor dysfunction: 13.9 kcal/cm × height (cm)
    • Non-ambulatory patients: 11.1 kcal/cm × height (cm)

Protein Requirement Formula

  • Calculated using RDA (2004) values for protein (g/kg/day) based on the patient's age. Uses 50th percentile weight for Down Syndrome < 5 years, otherwise uses actual weight.
